For many people, giving back is a passion they live for, it’s in their heart and soul. Some will give with volunteer work, and other give through in-kind or financial support.
EWI of Detroit-Windsor members and representatives are no different. Each month or each quarter we support one in-kind philanthropy effort in addition to our literacy and scholarship programs. We dig deep and give big.
Last night, the members, representatives and many friends of EWI came through to support the Detroit Fire Department with a collection of new teddy bears for children hit by a tragedy of a fire or auto accident.
In so many cases, the children are in shock and getting a simple thing like a teddy bear can comfort them beyond what we can imagine. It gives them a ‘friend’, something to hold and hug, and something to keep with them while their lives are in turmoil. To the child, it is a BIG thing. To us, well – just think about it….. the small child watching their belongings get destroyed and then to be given a teddy bear from the fireman…a gift of comfort and a gift of love. Those feelings that are coming up for you right now will tell you what it means to each and every one of us who supported with a donation.
For John Berlin, Deputy Fire Commissioner, attending the EWI Dinner & Teddy Bear Collection and receiving over 60 teddy bears was moving and it touched his heart. “Your group found a need in the community, you reached out to the fire department and you fulfilled that need. These teddy bears will truly soften a very traumatic event for some child whose been displaced from a fire or auto accident. These bears will go to a good cause.” stated Mr. Berlin.
“The organization as a whole always gives back to the community. Donatating the teddy bears at our December dinner gathering was the perfect thing to do at this time of the year. It warms our hearts and souls to do such a great thing for our community.” says Barb Duran, chapter president 2014/15.
In an effort to support the causes of our organization we promote the programs and services at our meetings and through our various communications methods. We also share a needs list with the member firms and representatives for in-kind support. In addition to the Detroit Fire Department, some of the featured organizations have included: Dominican Literacy Center, Gleaners Food Bank, and the Jackets for Jobs to name a few.
If your organization is in need of some EWI’s in-kind support, please contact Katha Chockley. “As with the Detroit Fire Department, we are always looking for where a need might be in our community so we can give our support to them.” Katha says. Katha is the chair for the EWI in-kind giving program. Email Katha at email@example.com.
