Windsor Essex County Fast Facts and Crossing the border with ease

Co-authored by: Irene Davis-Moore, Corinne Sutherland-Nikota and Amanda Iera

Our April meeting is in Windsor and as part of our international region we wanted to share fast facts about W.E. (Windsor-Essex County) and the latest updates to crossing the border with ease.

Who W.E. are

W.E. is the southernmost point in Canada, and home to the southernmost College in the country-St. Clair College

W.E. is . the birthplace of our 21st Prime Minister, Paul Martin, and home to the only wood carving museum in Ontario

W.E. are a growing tourism region with nearly 15 wineries (the first winery being opened in 1860 by three Kentucky Farmers on Pelee Island)

W.E. attracts bird watchers from all over the world to the first Bird Sanctuary in North America, Jack Minor

W.E. was a major escape route for over 30,000 slaves through the underground railroad and home to "the" Uncle Tom's Cabin, the best-selling novel of the 19th century written by an American writer, Harriet Beecher Stowe.

W.E. is the tomato capitol, the best place to live in Canada according to MoneySense magazine, and one of the first counties to be settled in Ontario.

W.E. has 100 miles of shoreline, the fourth most ethno-culturally diverse community in Canada and during the rumrunners time a frequent stop over for Al Capon and his Purple Gang
