Since 2002 we have partnered with local schools to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged students to help them achieve their highest potential. This pre-Kindergarten through fifth-grade community is comprised of low-income homes with ethnic backgrounds of 80% Hispanic, 10% Caucasian and 10% African American.

To date, through our partnership, EWI has assisted over 2650 students, 300 parents and 150 volunteers with reading programs, books, and desperately needed supplies.

We touch the very lives of these children and their futures, which ripples out into their families and community.

EWI is proud to provide two wonderful, local literacy-based programs and one national program.

“Authors Under Construction” – An EWI of Detroit-Windsor Literacy Program

6-13-14 HARMS WINNERS #2[9]

A few years ago, the EWI Literacy group launched a new community program in partnership with Inside Out at Harms Elementary School in Southwest Detroit.  With this program, the children became young authors under our “Authors Under Construction” program by participating in writing their own book. They became authors, illustrators and found a new excitement in their ability to use their imagination in writing.

EWI took our Literacy one step further and partnered with InsideOut Literary Arts Project and sponsored a “Writer in Residence” to come into the school once a week and work with the children in learning the proper way to write and publish a book. This is an amazing program for the children and school, but it is also a program that needs funding to continue each year.

How can you support this program?

HARMS - PICTURE OF BOOKS[6]EWI of Detroit-Windsor is reaching out to ask if you to support our Literacy Fundraising efforts which go to programs like this so that the children can receive this special guidance where they will learn the proper way to write a book. At the end of the year, their stories will become an anthology book and this book will be published through InsideOut.

As we continue to provide support for our annual Brick by Book – Building a School of Readers, and our “Authors Under Construction authors club, we are offering you the opportunity to partner with us at one of the following donation levels:

Brick by Book: Building a School of Readers

Brick by Book – Building a School of Readers, is a literacy program developed and supported by EWI of Detroit-Windsor.  The school year long challenge to the children is to see who reads the most words throughout the year.  The students are encouraged by teachers, staff and the principle, all whom believe this programs makes an big difference in the literacy of their students.

Kick-Off Rally

We start with a fun kick-off rally in the fall of the school year. With a construction theme, aka ‘building a school of readers’, EWI, friends of EWI and school staff wear their construction gear and sing along to YMCA (of course the children love to join in). Each student also goes home with a book and a beanie baby.

Ongoing Rewards

Each student who reaches their reading goal gets to put a paper brick in the dump truck in the office.  Once a week, students names are drawn from the dump truck, read over the PA and get to choose from a box of fun prizes.  This continual support and ongoing rewards give the students motivation to continue week after week.

Year End Celebration

At the end of the year, a celebration is held with a special ice cream treat. EWI brings an ice cream cart full of ice creams and gives to the entire school.
